One of the things I like most about Chicago is belonging to my knitting guild. Once a month I get to see the work of Excellent Knitters. It feeds me. I want to make what the Excellent ones are making. I don't consider my skills to be Excellent, although I do believe that my skills are much improved as a result of belonging to my guild. My membership has also given me access to some of the most Excellent teachers and designers. I saw this shawl at a guild meeting, knit by Cathy G., an Excellent knitter, and like myself, a Noro enthusiast. She had knit a modification of the Fenna shawl from Stahman's Scarves and Shawls. When Myrna was here, she wrapped herself in a bulky handspun Faroese shawl instead of using a jacket to keep her from the October chill. I thought she looked so glamorous. I wanted to look that way when I dashed out to take Piccolo out for a pee, or to the grocery store. Never mind that I would probably be wearing pajamas underneath it, but hey, I sleep with a man who wears parkas to bed. Remember when women dressed for simple errands like grocery shopping? Hats, gloves, makeup, foundation garments? I can't imagine. Cathy used 6 balls of Silk Garden to make her Fenna shawl. Being much taller, I'm now into ball 8 for the Fenna shawl in the photo, Silk Garden 84, which has been marinating in my stash! I really wanted to get the hang of the Faroese shaping before I dipped into some more fabulous fibers for future shawls, like the luscious Polwarth and silk purchased at the last Stitches Midwest. This is the easiest shawl in the book, and I think, a good use for the Silk Garden. I'm not sure if I will be glamorous wearing it.
