I've been knitting for over four decades. How on earth could I have missed out on Elizabeth Zimmerman? Here she was, in my backyard, Wisconsin, all that time. I talked the Man into a weekend away with an ulterior motive--I wanted to get up to Madison to see the New School Knitting exhibit on the last weekend. True to form, we got a very late start on Saturday, and realizing that we probably wouldn't make it in time, I suggested driving into Fontana and staying the night at my Mom's and going up on Sunday. My Mom is in Colorado already for the holiday festivities, so the Man and I got to play woodland House for the night. We got to the University of Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon. I thought that it was possible that I would see someone I knew there. But, I was surprised to see one of my people there. This photo is one of the original baby surprise jackets. The exhibit was a history of Schoolhouse Press, and the designers of today who are influenced by Elizabeth Zimmerman. She was a pioneer of the media, with a television show, magazines, and books. I feel like I missed out on all that history. I found my copy of Knitting Without Tears, and am plotting out a Seamless Hybrid sweater for one of my upcoming projects. I'm also obsessing about a really cute vest that another woman seeing the exhibit had knit. Of course, I can't find my Knitting Around (made a dickey for the man using this book) or Knitting Almanac. I may be doing a complete overhaul of this studio soon to find them! Ms. Sweetfigs told me about the Zimmermania blog, where participants are posting their Zimmerman projects. This is going to be one of my daily reads. When we left, the Man asked, '"did that woman drive up all the way from Chicago today for that?" I answered, "yes, and she was sick, too." My people. But the Man doesn't realize, we planned a whole weekend around it!

Wow! How did I miss that? Of course, I'm not sure I could have found a free weekend from October until now, but I might have given something else the boot...
i totally know what you mean about missing out on EZ! When I finally 'discovered' her, i bought all the books and refer to them all the time when i am 'freestyling' my knitting. she is/was the ultimate in functional knitting...
